Label for Secondary Chemical Containers

Chemical storage on shelf. Three spray bottles show different chemical labels.

When an organization wants to split up a large quantity of a product or chemical into smaller secondary containers, the safety best practice is to label the secondary container with enough information about the chemical to use it safely. This includes the following information:

  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS) product name
  • The chemical’s function
  • Area with applicable safety pictograms
  • Hazard statement
  • Precautionary statement
  • Personal protective equipment that may be required while using the chemical

Copy the above information from the product’s safety data sheet.

Ready-to-use Label

MCIT offers a label template for secondary chemical containers to make it easy for members to meet the safety best practice. The template includes a front and back label for the container:

  • Allows members to enter appropriate text into set fields and to select the corresponding pictograms as they apply to the product.
  • Designed to print to Avery UltraDuty GHS Chemical Label 60503 for a laser printer (3.5 in. x 5 in.)

Selecting Pictograms

  1. In the template, click a pictogram that is not needed.
  2. In dialogue box, click “clear image”
  3. Click “OK”
  4. Image will no longer be visible
  5. Do this for each pictogram that does not apply to the product
