Workers’ Compensation Coverage

MCIT workers’ compensation coverage pays for all benefits required of a member by the Minnesota Workers’ Compensation Act for injuries and illnesses suffered by employees while acting within the course and scope of their employment. Limits of coverage comply with Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 176 requirements.

Minnesota’s workers’ compensation system represents a compromise between the interests of the employer and the employee. The law:

  • Provides the exclusive remedy for work-related injuries.
  • Limits the amount of compensation.
  • Liability is assumed regardless of fault, assumption of the risk or if the injury was the responsibility of fellow employees.

Some Volunteers Qualify for Workers’ Compensation Coverage

For member organizations that have law enforcement and/or emergency management volunteers (per Minnesota Statutes, Sections 176.011 and 12.03), MCIT’s workers’ compensation coverage extends to cover those volunteers engaged in both training and active duty if registered and under the direction and control of the member.
