“Personnel Data and the Open Meeting Law” was originally broadcast as a webinar March 5, 2025.

The third in the three-part Minnesota Open Meeting Law webinar series, “Personnel Data and the Open Meeting Law” explains explores how the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act (another sunshine law) and the Open Meeting Law intersect when a governing body discusses personnel information. The session offers tips for navigating the two laws simultaneously, such as for:

  • Employee performance evaluations, discipline and termination
  • Preliminary consideration of allegations or charges against an employee
  • Hiring (reviewing employment applications, conducting interviews, making a job offer)

The Minnesota Open Meeting Law is part of the sunshine laws that apply to Minnesota governmental entities. Understanding when and how it applies to various situations is important to ensure compliance and that local government business is conducted in the open.
